As we dive head-first into the summer months, I’m reminded that those of us with office jobs often don’t have the benefits of enjoying the outdoors.

Sure, we might walk home from work, or spend time on a patio on the weekend. But for the most part, we spend most of our time indoors, in front of a computer, plugging away.

But what if we took a step back, and tried to even out our weekdays with a little attention to our personal lives?

Balancing our work and private lives may be the key to a happier life. This is a theory subscribed to by our cover interviewee this month — Mereille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, and Women, Work, and the Art of Savoir Faire.

Guiliano spoke to me about living life, and enjoying the finer things, like eating a homecooked meal, and turning off your Blackberry to have some space from work. She’s certainly an authority on balance, having worked towards it throughout her professional career.

In any case, we invite you to take a time out, peruse the interview, and have a good read, as ABJ highlights the best in business.

Have a good summer, and remember to stop and smell the roses.

Focusing on the state of Ohio, we bring you a profile on the young, ambitious Senator Sherrod Brown, who is leaving his mark in history. In our company focus, we put the spotlight on various organizations who share their success stories.

Last but not least, read our monthly lifestyle column to learn about the return on investment when it comes to weight loss in the workplace.

After the world’s economic leaders met in Iqaluit, N.W.T. to reaffirm their commitment to banking regulation last month, the spotlight is now on America’s failing system. When the housing market tanked and banks claimed bankruptcy because too many people couldn’t make their mortgage payments, the feds stepped in to save those banks “too big to fail” with a massive bailout package.

With President Barack Obama’s firm push for a banking bill to pass and a filibuster looming up in Capitol Hill, ABJ breaks down the problem that was missed by the media, how the end result will impact the banks’ bottom line and ultimately, the customer.

Focusing on the state of North Dakota, we bring you an exclusive interview with U.S. Governor John Hoeven, who has recently announced his run for a seat in the Senate this fall. In our company focus section, we put the spotlight on various organizations who share their success stories.

With world leaders having recently met in Copenhagen, the spotlight is now on China’s manufacturing sector and what its environmental and economic impact will be on the global community going forward in 2010 and beyond. Heads first started to turn when the U.S. hiked up its tariffs on tire imports last fall, initiating China’s launch of its antidumping probe into imported American goods and services. With China’s rapidly growing economy and its booming manufacturing sector, we got the chance to speak with Kathy Segerson, an expert in environmental and resource economics, to discuss China-America trading and what that dichotomy’s environmental impact will be in the future.

This month we also focused on the state of Maryland, and we bring you a profile on the ambitious Senator Barbara Mikulski, whose accomplishments and initiatives are admirable. It’s been said that small businesses will be the key to America’s economic revival, and so this month we scoured the country for entrepreneurs with great success stories, and learnt more about the Prison Entrepreneurship Program (PEP) as well as how a sports writer-turned CEO launched his own business.

Ah, flu season is back. It seems like everyone is either sick, worried about getting sick, or talking about healthcare in the U.S. Following a long debate over the summer and now the bills before the Senate, The American Business Journal (ABJ) looks at health care reform with a few features in our special double issue of ABJ, including a look at physician-owned hospitals, mental health care in the U.S. and an enlightening interview with Washington Governor Chris Gregoire— who speaks at length about health care changes. These articles are sure to be of interest to all our readers, but more importantly, our doctor CEO readers whose businesses may be affected by new reforms. Not only did we interview Chris Gregoire, we also focused on her state—Washington. We were privileged to have the opportunity to interview many legislative and city officials for features about the Association of Washington Cities, the City of Bothell, which celebrated its centennial anniversary this year, and the City of Bellevue.

Third time’s a charm. George Media is proud to present the first issue of The American Business Journal. Our third publication, the ABJ, is centered on issues facing the American public, and in this issue we highlight a variety of industry topics and trends – we hope you enjoy the read.

The housing industry is coming back...so the experts have said. But what about individual states? Where do they stand in terms of economic recovery? Our spotlight on Louisiana includes stories from Louisiana-based companies who are holding their own as the recession moderates. We had interviews with health care companies trying to make a difference, food and drink enterprises watching their industries grow, and contracting companies operating in the harshest conditions.

The American Business Journal, like its sister publications The Canadian Business Journal and The International Resource Journal, is BPA audited. We’re proud of that fact. We’re also proud that the launch of the ABJ signals a re-branding of George Media. Since we’ve celebrated a year in business, we’ve decided to undertake the mammoth task of re-branding the company so that the world can really see what George is made of. We have a stellar team behind our brand, and we’re looking forward to next month’s issue of the ABJ – as well as more new publications to come in 2010.
