GM Recalling 2.7 Million More Vehicles

ABJ –  It seems one of the most common words used in certain parts of the auto industry these days is “recall”.  General Motors knows that word all too well, and is using it yet again, on word that another 2.7 million vehicles need servicing based on a range of defects and faults.  This is on top of the already 2.6 million autos already on recall due to a defective ignition switch linked to at least 13 deaths.

The biggest recall involves the 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2007 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 and 2007-2010 Saturn Auras in the U.S. to modify the brake lamp wiring harness.

“Customer safety is at the heart of how GM designs and produces vehicles, and these announcements are examples of two ways we are putting that into practice,” Jeff Boyer, vice president of GM Global Vehicle Safety, said in a statement released this morning.

The American Congress and the U.S. Justice Department are examining why it took the automaker more than a decade to recall 2.6 million cars with switches that allowed keys to slip out of the “on” position, shutting off the engine and disabling air bags. In total, GM has recalled about 11 million cars this year.

With this latest announcement, the auto industry is on pace to have the most recalls in one year, at more than 17 million less than half way through the year.  The all-time worst year on record was 2004 when 31 million vehicles were recalled.
