Best Medical International
A company with a cause
It isn’t often that you see a medical solutions multinational company that is so invested in the improvement of the healthcare system. But that is exactly what Best Medical International is set out to do.
Originally founded 30 years ago, Best Medical is a group of medical therapies solutions companies that provides high quality products and services. When it first launched in February of 1977, Best Medical initially focused on providing various forms of oncology and radiation therapy for cancer patients with both malignant and non-malignant diseases.
More recently, however, Best Medical has expanded from brachytherapy to now cover clinical trials in cardiology, using radiation to unclog arteries, for which it was successful. Today, Best Medical provides diagnostic, therapies, prevention and early detection treatments through its cluster of trusted companies. This family of 10 companies—referred to as the group TeamBest™—has the united goal of being a single source supplier for the radiation oncology community.
Over the years, Best Medical has become more of a “vertically integrated social enterprise.” As Krishnan Suthanthiran, the owner and president of Best Medical International explains, “We want to control the supply chain as much as possible; this first starts with manufacturing our own products and we look for ways that one of our companies can do that.”
Partnering with facilities to offer cancer treatment
“If we do not have a certain capability, we look for others to help so that we can do as much as possible within our family of companies, in order to lower the overall cost of producing the product for the end-user,” says Suthanthiran. Headquartered Springfield, Virginia, Suthanthiran’s vision and drive has led the company to become a market leader.
Today, Best Medical is a multinational healthcare company with over 600 dedicated employees working around the world. Customers are healthcare-type companies, including hospitals and clinics worldwide. “Generally speaking, those in the oncology field know who we are,” tells Suthanthiran.
Over 2,700 Best Medical gamma therapy machines provide treatment to millions of patients around the globe every month. For those medical facilities without radiation therapy, Best Medical is well-equipped to support those healthcare providers who wish to become a cancer treatment center by setting up a program. “They construct the building, staff the facility and we bring in the technical infrastructure,” Suthanthiran further explains the cost-sharing initiative.
Now, the visionary leader is looking to be a catalyst for change.
Offering a solution for a broken system
When Suthanthiran refers to the cluster of companies as a social enterprise, he means doing business with a conscious. Through its related organization the Cure Foundation, Best Medical is engaged in the healthcare system as a medical solutions provider and catalyst for change. “Our ultimate goal is to reduce the cost of healthcare by 50 percent and to do that, we make technology and products available at a much lower cost,” explains Suthanthiran.
Challenges
The founder believes the healthcare system is fundamentally broken and that many medical companies are simply in the business to profit. “As a private company, we have the luxury of not having to focus on the bottom line and focusing on what we can do to improve the healthcare system,” explains Suthanthiran. His solution: create a new paradigm with a foundation or, a private not-for profit organization to alleviate a strained system. Although the concept has not been particularly well received in countries like Canada, where there is a publicly funded system, he is determined to see change.
More recently, Best Medical launched a new member of its Team Best family called, Best Cyclotron Systems, Inc. Based out of Ottawa, Ontario, Best Medical runs its Canadian operations and provides support for therapeutic medicine more specifically, diagnostic medicine with its line of radioisotope production cyclotron systems. The low-cost radiation solution already has orders worth $420 million. However, Best Medical is facing a great challenge in tapping the domestic market, due to what he refers to, as a lack of foresight on the government’s behalf. The local newspaper has been covering its $100 million bid for new contracts. If awarded, it means job creation in the government town and resurgence in the high tech sector in Kanata, just on the western outskirts of the capital city.
Future plans
Nuclear medicine has been in crisis since an aging isotope reactor at Chalk River, just outside of Ottawa was shut down due to a leak last spring. It produced close to 60 percent of North American isotopes. Best Medical sees this as a window of opportunity to assist end-users, Canadian cancer patients, but it must convince the governments first. Without going into much detail, Best Medical hopes to be a part of the solution by expanding its product line this year.
Looking onto the future, Best Medical is looking to be an agent of change through its network of companies, its Cure Foundation and strong partnerships with universities around the world to set up cancer treatment centers.
