The tradition of quality

When things heat up in a fire situation, those on the front line of a rescue team rely on their equipment and tools. This is exactly why manufacturer Seagrave Fire Apparatus produces one of the toughest built rescue trucks—and has become a market leader for 125 years.

Seagrave, the oldest manufacturer of fire apparatus in North America, is based out of Detroit, Michigan. Seagrave was founded in 1881 by Frederic Seagrave, who began by building a steamer, then continued on to construct a fire apparatus and finally got into aerials as they became a necessity in the field. Ten years later, the founder decided to move to Columbus, Ohio. In 1963, the business was acquired by FWD Corporation, which opened the doors for Seagrave in the fire industry in Clintonville, Wisconsin.

As time has passed, however, Seagrave’s area of specialty has changed, as many other competitors expand into the niche market of manufacturing fire service and rescue products, mostly custom stainless steel cab and chassis for high horsepower engines. Today, Seagrave is a portfolio company of ELB Capital Management LLC, and currently runs its operations, which include design, manufacturing, assembly and testing, in three separate locations.

Preferred brand choice in the fire halls

Seagrave Fire Apparatus products are sold and serviced by a nationwide, factory-trained dealer organization that is readily available to assist with any service or technical support needs, including cabs, chassis, bodies, pumps, ladders and aerial components. When it comes to cabs and chassis, in particular, Seagrave has a tremendous story to tell—something no other apparatus manufacturer can match.

The manufacturer has become a household name in fire halls. Its superiority in quality and safety make it the choice brand among the largest fire departments in the United States, including New York City, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., as well as several communities, townships and villages nationwide.

Unique design sets company apart

Whether it is an automobile accident or a cat stuck in a tree, firefighters are making more emergency calls than ever before. But sadly, the most dangerous part of the job is now traveling to and from an emergency situation. That’s why Seagrave has developed a cage-like design, which is now constructed with a rigid, stainless steel sub assembly that totally surrounds and protects the driver, captain and crew while they are traveling to and from a scene.

This life-saving “safety cage” cab design has earned Seagrave an unmatched reputation for dependability under the toughest of conditions. And the safety testing results say it all. “The people who conduct the safety testing [for emergency vehicles] told us we are the only ones who passed all the required tests in one cab,” says Arnold Heller, vice-president of sales and marketing of Seagrave Fire Apparatus. This impressive end result also means a better performing, longer-lasting product from bumper to bumper.

These days, firefighting squads are looking for emergency vehicles that have multiple functions and tools. Seagrave has listened and responded. From custom to commercial design-build, engineers at Seagrave create products that stand out from the rest, especially when it comes to aerial ladders and chassis—one of its unique manufacturing distinctions. Today, the manufacturer offers one of the broadest lines of custom fire fighting and rescue apparatus, including: aerials, aerial platforms, tractor-drawn aerials, pumpers and rescue units. The manufacturer has also established an impressive offering of commercial fire fighting and rescue units that embrace the Seagrave tradition of quality.

Product line overview

Seagrave’s top brand names include: the Marauder II, Attacker II, Sentinel, Specialist, Optimum, Meanstick, Force, Aerialscope II and Apollo II. As briefly mentioned above, The Marauder II Cab is built with more structural integrity as any other cab on the market. This remarkable cab begins with a Seagrave exclusive—a substantial three-inch rectangular-tube steel sub frame. Welded over this sub frame is a completely enclosed, all-stainless steel super-structure that creates a protective cage. The entire structure is then covered with heavy gauged, stainless steel. The finished Marauder II cab is not only stronger than any competitors’ but it is safer, too.
