Allan Company
Allan Company has been a leader in the recycling industry since 1963. As the largest independently owned processor, broker, packer and exporter of recovered fiber in 13 locations in the western United States, Allan Company markets well over 1.3 million tons of materials annually.
The family-run and operated recycling service provider, Allan Company was founded in 1963 by its current president Stephen Young. As an exporter of recycled goods, Allan Company currently handles over one million tonnes of recovered fiber annually, both domestically and overseas.
Headquartered in Baldwin Park, California, Allan Company operates 12 buyback and recycling facilities that are open to the public, out of which its products are sold to commercial and industrial businesses. In addition to its recycling programs, Allan also has a warehouse capacity of over 600,000 square feet and two brokerage offices, one in Phoenix and another in Chicago.
Recycling services include the use of bins, timely pickups and competitive pricing for recyclable material. Types of materials accepted are: paper, aluminum, plastic, glass and electronic waste. What sets Allan apart from other recyclers, however, is their customized approach which is a big draw for customers who are looking for ways to save money. It has also, in turn, generated profits and overall growth. “Our company started by simply finding innovative ways to get our customers’ recycling program—whatever it may be—to the next level; whatever it is they desire, we design it for them,” explains Jason Young, vice-president at Allan Company and son of the founder. “We began serving those customers too small to be considered by other recyclers,” he tells.
Allan Company currently provides comprehensive recycling programs to over 2,000 commercial accounts and governmental agencies nationwide by ensuring that municipalities and commercial entities meet or exceed their recycling goals. To date, Allan Company conducts over 3,000 transactions per day with the general public at our numerous facilities.
Customers include anyone that generates scrap, ranging from the guys with small pickup trucks to larger companies. “Our primarily business is the paper recycling, but we now do all kinds including blue bin or curb side recycling to scrap metal,” says Young. Allan Company has continued to adapt to its customer base and their needs by offering a more customized and comprehensive recycling program.
In addition to its varied services, Allan Company also buys and sells directly to the industry and the consumer. “It eliminates a lot of the intermediary brokerage business so, we actually get the top dollar for our materials,” explains Young. Here’s a brief overview of services:

Education aspect a value-add
While interested in ramping up their customers’ recycling programs, Allan Company also emphasizes the importance of educating them in order to make informed decisions to meet their specific needs. “We always try to do the best for our customers but now what’s happening is recycling is considered more mainstream and more people are interested in it,” tells Young.
One of key requirements at Allan Company is that all staff members must go through extensive training to become knowledgeable about the different types of recyclable materials and how the business works. And it goes the other way, too. Customers are also guided through the process so they make better and well-informed decisions. “At one time, no one wanted to discuss it now everyone wants to flourish, they want recycling programs and divert materials from the landfill and save the resource,” he says. “We always want our customers to understand what they have and what its worth,” he adds.
Industry issues
Allan Company is a member in good standing and actively involved in numerous recycling organizations such as the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI). “I really believe that the government isn’t helping business. We need some relief,” says Young. But he adds having ISRI has a point of contact for the many hot topics is a huge benefit as a current member. One of the key issues on their radar is the distinction between waste and recycling management.
With its customized-approach to designing recycling programs for companies of all sizes, Allan Company will continue to expand and grow in the near future with its comprehensive package and educational services.
